4 Generations of Service

William Patton Emmons

William Patton Emmons was a pioneering entrepreneur whose vision and dedication profoundly shaped the landscape of Jackson, Michigan. He began his journey with an excavation company, building on a foundation laid by his father. What started as a modest operation evolved into a business that compared favorably to larger enterprises in much bigger cities. Emmons Excavation quickly became the go-to choice for digging cellars and supplying sand and gravel for major construction projects. There were few homes built in Jackson over the past decade that didn’t rely on materials provided by his company.

As he expanded into waste management with Emmons Service, his leadership style earned him the nickname "the velvet hammer." This moniker reflected his ability to balance strength and compassion, allowing him to lead effectively while maintaining strong relationships with employees and customers alike. His innovative approach and commitment to customer satisfaction established the company as a trusted name in Jackson and beyond.

Beyond his business accomplishments, Emmons played a significant role in the development and maintenance of Jackson's fire department, contributing to the safety and advancement of the community. His commitment to public service and community engagement ensured that his influence would be felt long after his passing.

William P. Emmons left behind a legacy of integrity, service, and innovative leadership. Today, Emmons Service proudly continues his vision, serving Jackson with the same commitment and dedication he instilled in the company over a century ago. His memory lives on in the community he cherished and helped to build.

Robert Hague Emmons

Robert Hague Emmons purchased Emmons Service in the mid-1920s and led the company until 1981. Under his stewardship, Emmons Service worked to set new standards in waste management for the Jackson community. In addition to his business achievements, Robert was a community leader and one of the founders of the Waterloo Hunt Club in 1941. He also owned a popular root beer stand from 1975 to 1978, further showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. After nearly five decades of leadership, he sold Emmons Service to his son, David Del Emmons, ensuring that the family legacy of quality service would continue.

David Del Emmons

David Del Emmons took the helm of Emmons Service in 1981, following in the footsteps of his father, Robert Hague Emmons. Under David's leadership, the company embraced innovation and modernization in waste management. He introduced the "Curby" cart service in 1985, revolutionizing how residential garbage was collected by providing a more efficient and user-friendly solution. Recognizing the growing importance of sustainability, David also established a compost drop-off site for yard waste in 1988, positioning Emmons Service as a pioneer in recycling and environmental responsibility within the community. His commitment to enhancing service and embracing new technologies helped solidify Emmons Service’s reputation as a trusted partner for Jackson residents. David's vision and leadership ensured that the family legacy continued to thrive, adapting to the evolving needs of the community while maintaining the core values of service and integrity that have defined the company for generations.
